ICS/OT

An Agnostic Approach to Securing ICS/OT (SCADA) Systems

RPI's success at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina (CLNC) is an excellent example of how our Human-Centric approach can solve our customers' problems.

Our challenge was to complete a task that others could not. Marine Corps Base (MCB) CLNC covers over 240 square miles. Their Public Works Division (PWD), realizing that critical infrastructure is the target of our adversaries, required a cyber-secure architecture that provides secure network connectivity for visibility of the disparate legacy Facility Related Control Systems (FRCS) across the installation. Due to the size of CLNC, installing a separate network was not an option. The solution required the incorporation of the installation's existing enterprise network.

Many buildings on CLNC have Industrial Control Systems/Operational Technology (ICS/OT) devices from multiple manufacturers connected by different network technologies, including copper, fiber, WiFi, and cellular networks. The only option was to design, secure, accredit, install, and maintain a vendor and network-agnostic solution based on these requirements. For almost nine years, the Marine Corps invested millions of dollars into proposed solutions that could not meet the Marine Corps' strict cybersecurity requirements. We came in and solved it in less than 14 months.

By taking a Human-Centric approach,

RPI engineered a network and vendor-agnostic, cost-effective solution that improves the resiliency of the networked systems while ensuring the mission readiness of Camp Lejeune and the Warfighters living and training there. This solution operates securely on the local, secure, hosted enterprise network. By implementing a cyber-secure architecture utilizing Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS 140-2) approved cryptographic devices and operating at Layer Three of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, our solution is always up-to-date and implements the latest security features available on the local hosted network.

Securing ICS/OT (Industrial Control Systems / Operational Technology) involves protecting the systems and technologies used to monitor and control industrial processes—such as those in power plants, water treatment facilities, manufacturing plants, and critical infrastructure—from cyber and physical threats.

ICS (Industrial Control Systems) is a general term for systems like SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), DCS (Distributed Control Systems), and PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) used in industrial environments. OT (Operational Technology) refers to the hardware and software that detects or causes changes through direct control of physical devices, processes, and events.
